Conduct of the operation

Doctor JRM will visit you in your room before you are brought to the operating room.

The anesthesia will place a tube in your larynx to ensure good breathing; this intubation may cause a small transient gene postoperatively.

The duration of the intervention varies from case to case, but in general it varies between 1h30 and 2h30.

In the event of a procedure on a parathyroid, the time will be 1 hour maximum (awaiting the results of PTH at the end of the operation in order to know if the other parathyroids must be reviewed).

You will then be taken to the surveillance room where you will spend the first night.

The next morning you will be returned to your room.

If a drainage has been put in, it will be removed 2 to 3 days after the operation: it is a painless gesture.

You will then be authorized to leave after having seen the endocrinology and received the recommendations of Dr. Jean-René Milliet (any sporting activity is prohibited as well as the intake of alcohol for 10 days).

A week later, the stitches will be removed by dr JRM himself.

You will put petroleum jelly on the operated area for a week.

Then apply a cream (Hyaluset) or a mixture of essential oils morning and evening for 1 month.

50% protection will be applied to the operated area during prolonged exposure to the sun, for 5 months.

Complications observed:

All surgery involves risks, but these have greatly diminished with technical progress:

magnified operating field, neuromonitoring, but above all with a trained surgical team.
Voice modification and calium troubels are always possible; they will be taken care of, according to the endocrinologist, the phoniatrist, under the supervision of Dr. Jean-Marie Milliet.
Hematoma requiring surgical revision is rare.

The surveillance :

In oncology, it is based on ultrasound and a blood test which will measure the THYROGLOBULIN which, if it is measurable or increases, makes suspect a recurrence, The first year once every 6 months, then once a year.

In case of hyperthyroidism: The Endocrinologist is the conductor
